Being a working mom and having kids home for the summer

June 03, 2014

I have two boys, ages 6 and 2 1/2. Next week my oldest will be finishing his first year of Kindergarten! It's an exciting time but I have also have been in panic mode trying to figure out what to do with them over the summer. Lots of moms I know love summer vacation. No homework, no getting up early and getting everyone out the door. For me it means more distraction while I'm trying to run my business. Don't get me wrong, I love summer, especially here in Oregon since it's the only chance we are guaranteed to see sun for a few months. I also LOVE my kids to death but when you are trying to run a business it's really hard to work when they want to go play at the park, etc.

In August I am doing my first wholesale trade show. I have wanted to do one for years but I was never able to just pull the trigger and do it. I never felt quite ready or made the excuse that I couldn't with little kids. This year I knew I was ready and I am so excited to have the opportunity to show my line to lots of different buyers in one place. With no family near by I don't just have someone who can watch my kiddos for a week while I'm gone. My husband works too and can't just take time off for my business. This year really felt like the right year to do it, so I have made it happen and I can't be more excited! My parents live in a place that is VERY warm over the summer so my mom is coming to help out for the week and escape some of the heat.  This also means I can't take more time off for the summer and just relax and hang out with my kids. I have to put the finishing touches my fall/holiday collection, photograph it, finalize my display, design, order and mail postcards, update my line sheets with the new collection, etc, etc, all in between making and shipping orders and all of the other stuff it takes to run a business.

My youngest will still be in his daycare two mornings a week, but it's only two mornings. He does still nap thankfully so that is when I get a lot of work done so I'm not up all night. So what to do with my oldest? I have been working on finding summer camps that he wants to do. I had made lots of suggestions but he didn't like all of them. Today I am feeling relieved that he is all signed up for a bunch of fun camps, most importantly that HE wants to do! One of them is during nap time which is perfect so I can get a full 5 days of complete silence during that time and not have to worry about my youngest. While he's not at camp we will get to do fun summer stuff and hang out with friends and enjoy the few short months of sunshine that we get here in Oregon.

But just so we don't miss out on some fun time together and to really be there for my kids, I am closing the studio from June 15-25th. I don't want my boys to grow up and not remember their mom being around at all during the summer. If you are going to be needing any new jewelry for summer or have any birthdays, etc coming up, now would be the time to do it since I won't be shipping anything out during those dates.

If you are/were a working mom with young kids, how do/did you handle summer? I would love to hear in the comments below!
